| What started as a hobby in the family garage has developed into a full-fledged handcrafted furniture business! Hartford House owner Sarah Smith bought a few solid wood pieces from a neighbor, and she sanded and stained those pieces herself. And then she bought another piece…and another…and before she knew it her husband lost his parking place in the garage!
That’s when Sarah moved into a small retail space in Anderson Village Shopping Center on Georgia Highway 365 in Habersham County, Georgia. She set up shop with nine basic furniture designs. She finished the furniture in the back of the store while her mother, armed with a cigar box for a cash register, watched the sales floor.
The business grew quickly, at one time encompassing almost 14,00o square feet, complete with retail furniture showrooms and a finishing shop. In March of 2007, almost 19 years of hard work went up in flames when Hartford House burned. The building and all of the contents were lost. To Sarah Smith, the event was simply another challenge of doing business, and construction began in August 2007 on a new Hartford House building.
Sarah’s goal in 1988 was the same as it is today: to provide quality handcrafted furniture to the public at a fair price. Take a virtual tour today to see how Hartford House creates heirloom furniture. Better yet, visit the foothills of Northeast Georgia to see the new and improved Hartford House! |
